01Why teach DET?
Scottish schools need Design, Engineering and Technology teachers. It is a practical, creative job where no two lessons are the same.
Reason 01
Workshops, CAD suites and design studios are your classroom. You teach pupils to sketch, model, machine and build – and you keep learning new skills yourself.
Reason 02
From CAD and 3D printing to electronics and engineering, you open doors to apprenticeships, college and university for every kind of learner.
Reason 03
Technological Education is a bursary subject for eligible career changers, and new teachers get a guaranteed one-year probation post through the Teacher Induction Scheme.

A UK degree (or equivalent) with at least 80 SCQF credit points relevant to Technological Education, at least 40 of them at SCQF level 8 or above.
02
For example mechanical, electrical or electronic engineering, mechatronics, architecture, construction technology or building services.
03
For example computer-aided design, graphic design, CAD/CAM, industrial design or product design. You also need to show you can develop practical skills.
04
Higher English (SCQF level 6) and National 5 Mathematics (SCQF level 5), at grade C or above, or equivalent.
05
Complete a GTCS-accredited course (a one-year PGDE or a teaching degree), join the PVG scheme, then do your probation year to gain full GTCS registration.
Summarised from the GTCS Memorandum on Entry Requirements (September 2024). Universities may ask for more, so always check the course page. Visit the GTCS website ↗
